Winter Activities

Cold-weather enthusiasts can enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, winter camping, and ice fishing. Some park roads may be closed because of heavy snows. Mancos State Park is a popular “staging area” for snowmobiling on the nearby West Mancos Trailhead in the San Juan National Forest, which is less than two miles from Mancos State Park. The trail gives snowmobilers access to hundreds of miles of trails. Go snowmobiling on the West Mancos Trail and stay in one of the yurts at Mancos.

The Mancos campground is open throughout the winter. Sites in the main campground are open and plowed. Drinking water is available at the campground throughout the winter.

Because of the changing water levels, recreationists who venture on the ice must exercise extreme caution. Before going out onto a frozen lake, pond, or river, it’s important to take safety precautions to reduce the risk of falling through the ice. Knowing how to judge ice conditions will also help you make more informed decisions while enjoying winter activities.
