Winter Activities
Winter recreation enthusiasts come to Vega for ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, sledding and snow play. The snowmobiling/OHV staging area gives snowmobilers access to hundreds of miles of trails on the Grand Mesa National Forest. Check out Vega’s OHV/Snowmobiling page for additional information.
Ice fishing usually starts in late December or early January and lasts until early March. Make a weekend of it by staying in one of our cozy cabins!
New Cross-Country Skiing Trail!
Check out the new 2.32-mile cross-country ski trail! This trail has varying slopes and is groomed when conditions allow. This trail starts at the Visitor Center, where you will want to stop in and check out our Rocky Mountain Conservancy Bookstore before starting your trek. View Vega Brochure and Map.
Ice Safety and Conditions Reports
Winter enthusiasts are encouraged to call the park office for current conditions (970) 487-3407. Before going out onto a frozen lake, pond or river, it’s important to take safety precautions to reduce the risk of falling through the ice. Knowing how to judge ice conditions will also help you make more informed decisions while enjoying winter activities.
