Winter Activities
Two campground loops are open year-round as are the three cozy yurts. Combine visits to local winter recreation spots and area hot springs with comfortable stays at a yurt for a welcome change of pace. Winter visitors include ice climbers visiting the world-class Ice Park in nearby Ouray and alpine skiers headed to the powdery slopes of Telluride or Silverton.
The solitude of Ridgway State Park in the winter is a peaceful change of pace from the hectic summer season. Wildlife viewing is far superior in the winter because more animals venture about in the park when the crowds leave. Given our limited snowfall, trails tend to stay open for hiking. Depending on snow conditions, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, sledding, and ice fishing may be possible, but check with the park on conditions before your visit. Snowmobiling is prohibited in the park.
Ice Safety
Before going out onto a frozen lake, pond, or river, it’s important to take safety precautions to reduce the risk of falling through the ice. Knowing how to judge ice conditions will also help you make more informed decisions while enjoying winter activities.
