Biking

36 miles of trails are open to mountain biking. Please stop by the Visitor Center to inquire about biking opportunities and pick up a map. Bikers must stay on designated trails. All trails are Pikes Peak decomposed granite with loose gravel in spots.

Expect moderate to steep sections on trails; no easy bike trails. (Updated: 2/28/2022 1:36 PM)

Boating

We do NOT allow boating on our ponds at the park.

Boating Registration and ASN stamps are available at the Visitor Center.

Cabins and Yurts

Nestled among meadows and conifer forests, lie the three beautiful rustic-style log cabins of Mueller State Park. A fantastic view of Pikes Peak, tall pine trees, and a variety of wildlife add to the charm of these mountain retreats.

  • Pine Cabin – 2 bed / 1 bath (4 person max)
  • Spruce Cabin – 3 bed / 1 bath (6 person max)
  • Ponderosa Cabin – 4 bed / 2 bath (8 person max)

  • Reservations must be made for a minimum of 2 nights.
  • The cabins can be rented by calling reservations at: 1-800-244-5613 or online, Book your cabin now!

  • Each of the three cabins now has fire pits.
  • Restrictions: Smoking, marijuana use and pets are prohibited in the cabins and cabin area (includes parking areas, yards, etc.) Maximum occupancy is strictly enforced. (Updated: 5/28/2023 1:46 PM)

Camping

Mueller offers year-round camping opportunities including the following: basic, primitive, electric, accessible, equestrian, RV camping, as well as 3 fully furnished cabins.

Reservations can be made online here or made over the phone through Aspira by calling at 1-800-244-5613.

Cross-country Skiing

Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing are popular winter activities here at Mueller State Park.

  • All trails are open to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
  • Two trails are groomed for cross-country skiing.
  • Always bring a trail map.
  • Provide your own equipment - Mueller does not rent snowshoes or skis.

Safety Information

  • Winter weather is unpredictable. Snowstorms can move in rapidly. Be prepared!
  • Snow and high elevation intensify solar rays. Bring sunscreen, lip balm, a hat, and sunglasses.
  • Always go prepared to spend the night in case of injury or if someone in your party gets lost. Bring plenty of water, food, compass/GPS, flashlight with extra batteries, fire starter, waterproof matches, and a cell phone with a charged battery.
  • Allow for limited daylight, varying snow conditions, temperature extremes, and the ability of group members.
  • Park in designated areas only. Parking along the side of the roadway is prohibited. (Updated: 2/11/2021 3:49 PM)

Dog-friendly

Pets are welcome in the campground, picnic areas, and along the developed road system throughout the park. Please clean up after your pet. Pets must be on a six-foot leash or shorter, at all times.

PETS ARE NOT PERMITTED ON ANY TRAILS, IN THE BACKCOUNTRY, IN THE PONDS OR IN PARK BUILDINGS INCLUDING RENTAL CABINS AND VISITOR CENTER.

Service dogs are permitted on trails - to avoid problems, please let park staff know ahead of time if you will have a service dog on a trail. (Updated: 5/22/2019 4:27 PM)

Group Camping

Looking to plan a family reunion or fun weekend get-away with friends? Mueller offers three wonderful group campground opportunities - Pisgah Point East (4 sites) and Pisgah Point West (7 sites) or Pisgah Point East & West combined (11 sites) - all are nestled in the aspen and conifer forest, conveniently located near the Camper Service Building.

Dates: Mid May - Mid October

Pisgah Point Group Loop East

Cost: $144 per night (4 sites 70-73) Maximum Occupancy: 4 camping units and 24 people

One camping unit with up to 6 people is allowed per campsite. A camping unit is defined as the maximum combination of camping equipment allowed in one campsite. The allowable combinations are: One passenger vehicle and two tents; or one motor home or pickup camper (or a motorized vehicle towing a camping trailer) and one tent (if space permits). One additional passenger vehicle may be parked at a campsite.

  • Site #70: Pull Through, 31’ RV Size, Tent Area 10x18
  • Site #71: Pull Through, 30’ RV Size, Tent Area 12x16
  • Site #72: Pull Through, 40’ RV Size, Tent Area 15x20
  • Site #73: Pull Through, 34’ RV Size, Tent Area 8x12

Hiking

Mueller offers over 50 miles of trails that offer many opportunities to explore the beautiful foothills of the Rockies. Mueller State Park’s trails are accessible via foot, horseback, or mountain bike.

Horseback Riding

Equestrian Camp Sites

  • Campsites 133 and 134 are available for those people who wish to camp with their horses.
  • Each site also has a 12’ x 12’ tent pad and a 35’ RV pad.
  • Corrals are 12’ x 24’.
  • The fee per horse per night is $10.
  • Equestrians are welcome to use the barn interior stalls along with the corrals.
  • Bring your own weed-free feed, water bucket (water hydrant available) and tools to clean up after your horses.
  • ONLY 2 HORSES PER SITE ARE PERMITTED. THE PARK CANNOT ACCOMMODATE MORE THAN 2 HORSES PER SITE.

Equestrian Trails

  • 34 miles of trails are open for equestrians - please pick up a map to know the location of horse trails.
  • Horses are not permitted on paved roads, in the campground or picnic areas.
  • Mueller does not provide horses for rent.

Hunting

Mueller is in a controlled hunting environment. IN 2024 ALL HUNTING IS PROHIBITED BETWEEN MAY 24th AND SEPTEMBER 2nd, 2024.

HUNTERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KNOWING PARK HUNTING RULES AND BOUNDARIES.

Mueller State Park offers 800+ acres of hunting area within its western portion, part of which is adjacent to Dome Rock State Wildlife Area. Opportunities for hunting include Mule Deer, Elk, Black Bear, Mountain Lion, Turkey, and small game.

Both the park and Dome Rock are within Game Management Unit (GMU) 581. The park’s hunting area is accessible by foot only and can only be accessed from Trail 5 (Rock Pond Trail), Trail 11 (Lost Pond Trail), and Trail 13 (Black Bear Trail). Access to hunting boundary is not permitted on any other trails.

Hunting weapons must be unloaded from the trailhead until the hunting boundary is reached. The boundary is clearly marked along those designated trails. Once the hunting boundary is reached, hunters may load their weapons and may stray from the trail to hunt.

OHV Riding

We do NOT allow OHV/ATV riding on our trails in the park. OHV Registration and OHV Permits are available at the Visitor Center.

Picnicking

Mueller offers 4 first-come first-served picnic areas in a beautiful forested setting, located at Bootlegger, Outlook Ridge, Lost Pond, and Preacher’s Hollow Trailheads.

Each area has tables spread out among the trees with an upright barbecue grill at each table.

Bootlegger Picnic Area has a picnic site that is accessible with a wheel chair. Non-reservable.

Sledding

Mueller’s popular tubing and sledding areas:

  • Preacher’s Hollow - east side of picnic area
  • Peak View Hill - across from sites 1-5

Please bring your own equipment. Mueller does not rent or sell sleds or tubes.

Snowmobiling

We do NOT allow snowmobile riding on our trails in the park. Snowmobile Registration and Snowmobile Permits are available at the Visitor Center.

Wildlife Viewing

Mueller State Park is a popular park for viewing wildlife. Many wildlife species call Mueller home. From black bear to birds, there is something for everyone.

Ask for a wildlife and/or bird checklist at the entrance station or the Visitor Center!

Winter Camping

Fall/Winter Camping

Reservations can be made online or made over the phone through Aspira by calling at 1-800-244-5613.

  • Firewood is for sale at the park - $6.00 per bundle
  • For rate information, please see the Fees page.
  • The Comfort Station, containing flush toilets, will remain open.
  • Vault toilets will be open at Outlook Ridge, Peak View Campground, and across from site #87.
  • Water is available at the outside spigot at the Comfort Station; all other hydrants are closed, so we suggest bringing your own water.
  • The dump station is dry dump only, which means you will not have water to rinse out your equipment.
