Outdoor Education
Summer provides a great opportunity to learn more about the outdoors and Eleven Mile State Park is proud to help lead the way in this effort. For well over a decade, the park has provided interpretive programs for visitors of all ages.
The following is a typical weekly schedule of the outdoor education programs presented by Eleven Mile’s Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) interpreters during the summer months:
Schedule | Programs |
---|---|
Friday evenings: | Programs for audiences of all ages |
Saturday mornings: | Children’s programs (youngsters) |
Saturday afternoons: | Junior Ranger Programs (7-12) |
Saturday evenings: | Guest Speakers/mixed age audience |
Sunday mornings: | Junior Ranger Award Ceremony |
Guest Speakers for the Saturday evening programs include representatives from:
- The Indigo Mountain Nature Center
- The Colorado Wolf & Wildlife Center
- The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
- Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument
- Fly Fishing Guide Brad Tomlinson of the Peak Fly Shop
- Jim Konowitz, Arkansas Valley Astronomical Society
- Celinda Kaelin, local author of “Pike’s Peak Backcountry”
- Steven Veatch, local expert on the geology of the region
- Mountain Man “Possum”, expert on Colorado’s Mountain Men
The Junior Ranger Program is designed for children ages 7 to 12. Those who complete the Eleven Mile State Park Junior Ranger Activity Book are invited to participate in the Junior Ranger Award Ceremony held every Sunday morning during the summer. At that time, successful participants will receive a Junior Ranger Badge and Certificate of Completion.
To support these programs, shop the Rocky Mountain Nature Association bookstore in the park office for books, maps, games, souvenirs, and postcards. All proceeds benefit the park’s future interpretive efforts.
