Amphitheater

AHRA has a small outdoor Amphitheatre at our Ruby Mountain campground which hosts programs throughout the summer.

Campgrounds

The 152-mile-long AHRA has eight basic campgrounds with tent pads, picnic tables, and grills and most campsite parking will also accommodate larger RV units. There is no running water or other utilities. There are also several undeveloped camping areas belonging to the Bureau of Land Management along the Arkansas River.

Dump Station

AHRA does not have any dump station sites.

Group Picnic Area

Collegiate Peaks Overlook group picnic site is located one mile east of Johnson Village off Highways 24 and 285, turning north onto County Road 304. There is a panoramic view of the Collegiate Peaks and Arkansas River Valley with a viewing pavilion and interpretive panels and benches. For group picnics, there is one covered pavilion with six picnic tables and two covered pavilions with one picnic table each. Collegiate Peaks can be reserved for group use by calling AHRA at 719-539-7289.

Horse Trailer Parking

There are no facilities for horses at AHRA campgrounds. There is a corral at Collegiate Peaks Overlook Day Use site for adjoining equestrian trails.

Showers

Shower facilities are not available at any AHRA campground as we do not offer running water or electricity.

Trails

See the AHRA Trails page for descriptions of trails leading from the Arkansas river access points, picnic areas, and campgrounds. There are also many popular hikes in the surrounding San Isabel National Forest, and backcountry opportunities are unlimited.

Visitor Center

The AHRA Visitor Center offers information and brochures about the park and associated recreational activities. Visitors will find books and memorabilia in the gift shop, may purchase licenses and passes, or register recreational vehicles.

The AHRA Visitor Center is located in downtown Salida at the corner of G St and Sackett Ave.

From the intersection of Highways 285/24:

  • Left/south onto Highway 285 for 14 miles
  • Left onto Hwy 291 for 8 miles
  • Left onto G St for one block
  • Left onto Sackett Ave

From the intersection of Highways 50/291:

  • Right/north on Hwy 291 (Oak St/1st St) for 1.2 miles
  • Right onto G St for one block
  • Left onto Sackett Ave

OHV, snowmobile, and boat registrations can be renewed online at cpwshop.com, at the AHRA Visitor Center, or by calling 800-244-5613. All first-time registrations and transfers must be done in person at the AHRA Visitor Center and must include a title, bill of sale, or certificate of origin. If you do not have the required paperwork for your machine, please call the AHRA at 719-539-7289 to schedule a VIN Inspection.

Please check OHV, snowmobile, or boat registration/permit requirements before hitting the trail or waters.
