Boating on the Arkansas River

Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) is home to some of the best whitewater boating in the country and one of the nation’s most popular whitewater rafting and kayaking destinations. The 152-mile stretch offers clear water, dramatic scenery, and rapids rated beginner to expert (Class II–V) — from large rapids to calmer stretches of water.

Native flows peak in early June; supplemental flows via Voluntary Flow Management Program extend season into mid-late August. Commercial outfitters provide guided trips through Class III+ rapids, calm-water floats, whitewater parks (Buena Vista, Salida, Cañon City, Florence), and walk-and-wade or float fishing tours.

Private Boaters

Private Boaters also run the Arkansas. Visit the Private Boaters page for descriptions of Brown’s Canyon and other sections of the Arkansas River that are popular with private and commercial boaters.

River Outfitters are a popular way for many people to experience a whitewater trip on the Arkansas River. Refer to the River Outfitters page for a list of commercial companies holding AHRA Special Use Agreements for boating, fishing, and other services.

River Safety and Flow information is an important part of the whitewater boating experience.
